The worker who cleaned the facade of a building in Curitiba (PR) and the rope that supported him was cut by a resident who said, in testimony, that the only reason he didn’t fall was due to the safety device.

“The victim only did not fall from the sixth floor thanks to the functioning of a safety device that prevented the fall,” informed the Public Ministry of Paraná.

This is a piece called a fall arrester, a fall arrest device used together with the safety belt and prevents the rope from slipping when there is rapid vertical movement.

The equipment has a steel cord, known as a “lifeline”, which runs from the top of the building to its base. It is on this cable that the “fall arrester” is attached. The device is then attached to the professional.

The man was 18 meters high when Raul Ferreira Pelegrin, resident of the penthouse, which is on the 27th floor, cut the rope with a knife. He was arrested in the act and charged with attempted murder.

The Civil Police interviewed a witness who was on the roof. According to her, the man said he was “fed up” and would give the employees ten minutes to “disappear” before cutting the rope.
