Correio newspaper | Professors at federal universities in Bahia hold strike next Wednesday

Despite the movement, there is no indication of a strike for federal institutions in the state

The next strike by teachers at federal universities in Bahia, associated with the Union of Teachers of Federal Higher Education Institutions of Bahia (Apub), is scheduled for next Wednesday (3). On the occasion, professors from the Federal University of Bahia (Ufba) will hold a demonstration at Praça da Piedade, in front of the Ufba School of Economics, starting at 9:30 am.

The strike was decided at the category’s last General Assembly on March 12th. The teachers defined an agenda of demonstrations for March, April and May 2024, due to the “permanent state of mobilization”. According to the union, in May, a new assembly will be held to evaluate local and national mobilization, as well as the results of the negotiation tables with the Federal Government.

The category demands the recomposition of budget cuts for Federal Higher Education Institutions (IFES) and a new salary adjustment proposal (since the government’s adjustment of 0% in 2024 and 9% for 2025 and 2026 was rejected by the category).

Last Friday (22), the National Union of Teachers of Higher Education Institutions (Andes-SN) stated that the union’s Ifes sector had approved the strike call for teachers at federal universities, federal institutes and cefets for the April 15th.

Apub, however, clarified that it is not represented by Andes-SN and that the institution’s indications do not apply to professors at federal universities in Bahia such as Ufba, the Federal University of Western Bahia (Ufob) and the University of Integration International of Afro-Brazilian Lusofonia (Unilab) Malês Campus.

“It is important to reaffirm that Apub is an autonomous union, affiliated to a federation, PROIFES, and to CUT. We are not affiliated to ANDES, an interstate union that does not represent all Universities and Federal Institutes in the national territory”, he states.
