Servers at federal schools and institutes

-

Teachers and other employees at schools and federal education institutes decided this Wednesday (27) to go on strike for an indefinite period starting next Wednesday (3). The decision was taken at a full assembly of the National Union of Federal Servants in Basic, Professional and Technological Education (Sinasefe) held this evening.

The category is mobilized for better salary and working conditions. They demand from the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) the replacement of salary losses accumulated during the governments of Presidents Michel Temer (MDB) and Jair Bolsonaro (PL), in addition to restructuring the career plan, more investments in institutions and holding a competition to hire more workers.

“We campaigned for President Lula, but we are negotiating with a broad-front government. And it hasn’t been easy,” said Elenira Vilela, professor and national general coordinator of Sinasefe.

A Sinasefe assembly in March had already voted for a strike indication. Regional assemblies confirmed the indication, which has now been approved nationally.

The strike tends to affect the functioning of federal schools, such as Colégio Pedro II, in Rio de Janeiro, and federal institutes, which offer secondary, technical and even higher education. In total, there are around 90 institutions and 70 thousand employees involved.

The strike at federal institutes tends to swell the strike movement that is growing throughout the federal education system. Technical administrative employees (TAEs) at federal universities have been on strike since the 11th. The movement affects at least 30 universities in the country. To date, more than 50% of the base of the Federation of Unions of Technical-Administrative Workers in Education at Public Higher Education Institutions in Brazil (Fasubra) has joined the movement.

TAEs constitute one of the 64 administrative careers of the Federal Executive Branch. There are approximately 133 thousand active employees and 69 thousand retired employees.

Teachers at federal universities and federal technological education centers (Cefets) announced a strike starting on April 15th. The decision was taken on Friday (22) in a joint meeting between representatives of 37 union sections from different parts of the country, after local assemblies.

According to the National Union of Teachers of Higher Education Institutions (Andes-SN), which organizes the mobilization, the strike is a consequence of the lack of progress in attempts to negotiate with the government. Teachers also ask for salary recovery, career restructuring and better working conditions.

O Brazil in fact contacted the MEC press office for a position on the strike movements at universities, but received no response. If there is a response, this text will be changed.
