Carlos Humberto proposes ‘public registration’ for pedophiles and sexual offenders in SC, but secretary says data is confidential

A ‘public registry’ for pedophiles and sexual offenders in Santa Catarina – this is the proposal by deputy Carlos Humberto Metzner Silva that is being processed in the Legislative Assembly (Alesc), but in the opinion of the Security Secretary of Balneário Camboriú, Antônio Gabriel Castanheira Junior, the law should not be approved because the data is confidential.

According to Carlos Humberto, the Bill aims to ensure that anyone knows who has already been convicted, with final judgment, through a list that will be under the responsibility of the Public Security Secretariat (SSP). “The names and photographs will also be available for sexual offenders of children and adolescents, in addition to those who are caught in the act committing these sexual crimes listed in the PL,” he said.

Carlos Humberto’s project comes at a time when Brazil mourns the 30th anniversary of the Escola Base episode, when innocent people, due to the press, were accused of pedophilia and had their lives seriously affected, considered guilty without trial, which is part of of the deputy’s proposal.

For the parliamentarian, physical and, especially, psychological damage compromises the well-being of victims for the rest of their lives. “We cannot allow sexual offenders and pedophiles to leave freely while awaiting trial, but as we know that they do, this registry will allow the population to know who these criminals are,” he added.

The complete personal data cited by the deputy are profession, address of last place of residence, place where the crime was committed, among other information, and are now accessed by Public Security bodies and kept up to date.

States such as São Paulo, Mato Grosso, Paraná and Rondônia already have this same registry with important results for the safety of the population.

Secretary says law cannot be approved
