The church of Our Lady of Lapa dos Mercadores This year, it once again has an extensive Holy Week program. One of the great locomotives of the revival of the Historic Center, it has brought together hundreds of people in what it called Holy Week on Rua do Ouvidor. Since its reopening, the temple has received thousands of visitors per week and has become a great symbol of the Reviver Centro project, which seeks to revive the city’s most historic region.

One of the highlights of the program will be the revival of the traditional Foot Washing, a ceremony of the Catholic Church, associated with the Last Supper, on Maundy Thursday (28/3), when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. As reported by the journalist Ancelmo Goisthe priests Victor Hugo Nascimento It is Victor Pereira they will perform the Washing of the Feet rite, scheduled for 5:30 pm, at Holy Communion Mass; the ceremony, solemn, will feature a Choir and Grand Orchestra, as well as a procession of the reposition of the most holy, which will use a historic gold-burnished urn from the 18th century, rescued by the brotherhood that owns the temple.

The church, which is the patron saint of traders in Rio de Janeiro, invited 12 trade representatives to participate in the Lava-Pés religious rite. At the ceremony, everyone will ask for the commercial resumption of the Center and the success of the region’s revival projects. The Hallelujah Saturday mass will have a true musical spectacle during the Eucharist, and will begin with a bonfire, at 6pm, in Arco do Telles. The brotherhood will use a historic candle holder torch from 1732, at the ceremony.

The Brotherhood is extremely proud to be returning to promoting popular devotions and traditions that helped shape Rio de Janeiro since its founding. And that’s why we’re promoting this Holy Week on Rua do Ouvidor. It was a joy to see the Palm Sunday procession completely packed in the middle of the rain at Arco do Teles. This is a resumption that comes along with our fight for the revival of the Historic Center of Rio de Janeiro“, it says Claudio Castroprovider of the Brotherhood of Merchants, the oldest organization of merchants in the country (1743).

In the last Palm Sundayday March 24tha procession took place leaving the Teles Archwhere a period oratory was installed in front of the future headquarters of the RIVER DIARY. The procession included several musicians and singers who accompanied the community of believers towards the little church, which is located right on the corner of Travessa do Comércio and Ouvidor. During the procession, the church doors remained closed, while the priest conducted an ancient ritual of Portuguese and Hispanic origin. This practice, still carried out today in the Cathedral of Braga, in Portugal, consists of a sung dialogue between a choir in the windows of the facade and the public outside, until the procession is authorized to enter the temple. The faithful carried the traditional palms that symbolize Palm Sunday, the date that begins the Holy Week celebrations.

The ceremony has the cultural support of Palácio da Tool, Shopping Paço do Ouvidor and Sergio Castro Imóveis.
