Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil and The Evil Within, spoke about his decision to leave Tango Gameworksexplaining that one reason is a desire to move away from the survival horror genre.

For those who don’t know, Mikami left Tango Gameworks in February 2023, a studio he founded in 2010. In an interview with Byking (translated by Automaton Media), Mikami spoke about the acquisition by Zenimax and the farewell took place last year.

“I was CEO for just 6 months. I think a lot of people had the impression that I was the representative, but I was very close to an employee. I had “___ producer” attached to my name, but I wasn’t an executive or anything like that,” Mikami said. “Tango Gameworks is not the name of a company, but the name of a department. The company name is ZeniMax Asia KK.”

Mikami later revealed that he had made the decision to leave Tango Gameworks eight years before the royal farewell and that he had extended his stay for a sense of responsibility towards projects under development.

As for the reasons for leaving, Mikami cited two factors. The first is that you want create a development environment where young players can have more frequent opportunities and gain experience, through short development cycles and games on a smaller scale than expensive AAA games. The second reason is the desire toand move away from the survival horror genrefor which he is famous.

That’s why he decided to found a new company at the beginning of this year, Kamuy, with which he intends to achieve both objectives. At the moment this new studio has not yet announced new games, but we know that it will collaborate with Grasshopper Manufactures for the development of Shadow of the Damned: Hella Remastered, the 2011 remaster created thanks to a collaboration between Mikami, Suda51 and Akira Yamaoka, the Silent Hill composer.
