A 60-year-old woman died on Wednesday (7/5) after having a sudden illness inside a bank branch in Rio de Janeiro. The case drew attention because it occurred in the same banking unit as the ‘Tio Paulo’ case.

To the Mail, Itaú Unibanco’s advisory confirmed that the case occurred on Wednesday afternoon (7). The Fire Department was called around 1pm to help the woman, but she did not survive.

In a statement, Itaú Unibanco reported that “all emergency protocols were immediately activated, including medical assistance.” They also regretted what happened and offered solidarity to the elderly woman’s family.

Furthermore, they informed that, out of respect for the victim, customers and employees, the unit will remain closed. “The employees were welcomed and will receive all necessary psychological support,” stated the company. (See the full note at the end of the article).

‘Uncle Paulo’ case

On April 16, Érika Souza took her uncle to the agency in Bangu, to withdraw the amount of a loan made by her uncle. The man, however, was dead at the time of treatment.

Upon noticing the man’s condition, agency employees took the uncle and niece to a private wing where an employee tried to give Paulo a heart massage. The Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) arrived later and one of the doctors found that Paulo had been dead for at least two hours, as the body contained livors, bloodstains that usually appear after this post-mortem period.

According to the report from the Legal Medical Institute (IML), Paulo died from bronchoaspiration of stomach contents and heart failure. The police asked that additional tests be carried out to find out whether Paulo suffered any type of intoxication.

The case is still investigated by the Rio de Janeiro Police.

What Itaú said

Itaú Unibanco deeply regrets what happened and offers its solidarity to the family. The client had a sudden illness at the entrance of the agency, so all emergency protocols were immediately activated, including medical assistance. Out of respect for the victim, customers and employees, the unit will remain closed. The employees were welcomed and will receive all necessary psychological support. Customers who need in-person service should look for a nearby unit, branch 8486 (Av. Cônego Vasconcelos) or access Itaú’s digital channels.
