Rio – A survey developed by the Fecomércio Institute of Research and Analysis (IFec RJ) identified the profile of foreign and Brazilian tourists in the city of Rio during this year’s Carnival. The results of interviews carried out with 1,400 people between the 5th and 19th of February were released this Wednesday (26th), at the Fecomércio RJ building, in Flamengo, in the South Zone. The survey showed that the biggest visitors to the capital during the festivities they were Argentines and Americans.

The institute interviewed 791 foreign tourists and 609 Brazilians on the coast between Copacabana and Barra da Tijuca and during the four days of the parade in Marquês de Sapucaí. According to the survey, Argentines are the majority (16.3%) among foreigners, followed by Americans (13.1%) and Chileans (12.5%).

Of the 56.5% foreign tourists surveyed, 55.5% are from the American continent. Europe, with 38.8%, is in second place. The French (7.5%), the English (7.2%) and the Portuguese (4.3%) are the Europeans who most seek out Rio during the Carnival period.

Among Brazilians, who correspond to 43.5% of those interviewed, Rio de Janeiro is most visited by people from São Paulo (25.3%), followed by people from Minas Gerais (20%) and people from Rio Grande do Sul (13.3%).

The overwhelming majority (91.8%) visited Rio for leisure, holidays and for Carnival. The biggest popular festival in the country is responsible for 30.2% of this total.

According to the survey, 58.1% of respondents had previously visited Rio de Janeiro, compared to 49.1% who were in the city for the first time. Of the tourists who have visited Rio before, 27.7% said they had been to the city more than ten times.

Financial movement

IFec RJ research shows that the direct impact on the economy of the State of Rio with expenses such as accommodation, restaurants, entertainment and product purchases is R$2.35 billion. The financial movement of Brazilian and foreign tourists in sectors related to tourism is R$6 billion.

Among visitors, 12.4% of tourists said that Rio is a cheap or very cheap destination. 40.3% considered it expensive or very expensive. 47.4% find it neither expensive nor cheap.

Tourist attractions

When asked about three tourist attractions they visited or intended to visit, Christ the Redeemer was the most mentioned (62.6%), followed by Sugarloaf Mountain (48%) and beaches (18.6%).

The Sambódromo da Marquês de Sapucaí was mentioned by 14.9% of those interviewed, while Maracanã by 9.4%.

Tourists also evaluated their experience in relation to the services provided in Rio. 81.7% said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the diversity, availability and quality of commerce.

Regarding the quality of services in accommodation and accommodation, 85.5% were satisfied or very satisfied.

The gastronomy also pleased 84.4% of those interviewed, while the hospitality was satisfactory for 87.4%. Still regarding consumption, 88.9% of foreign and national tourists said they have the habit of consuming typical products from local suppliers.

The signage, availability and quality of tourist information satisfied 76.9%. 88.5% of respondents were satisfied or very satisfied with cultural offerings, such as historical sites, museums, shows and traditions.

81% said they were satisfied or very satisfied with accessibility and transport. The cleanliness, climate and beauty of the natural environment pleased 78.3% of those interviewed.

Sustainable accommodation and hotels

46.6% of tourists stayed in hotels, while 31.9% stayed the night in a property or room rented via digital platforms. The average stay for tourists in the state is eight days, nine days for foreigners and seven for Brazilians.

According to the survey, 74.4% of those interviewed by IFec RJ believe it is important to have sustainable hotel options, which take into account social, environmental and economic impacts. 64.5% would be willing to pay more for this type of accommodation. When asked if they looked for sustainable accommodation options, 20% of respondents answered yes.

Recommendations for other cities

During their stay, only 35.5% of tourists stated that they received recommendations to visit other cities, in addition to the capital. 64.5% said they had not received any indication.

According to the survey, 33.1% of respondents said they had visited or intended to visit other municipalities. The main destination is Búzios (46.1%), followed by Arraial do Cabo (35.3%), Angra dos Reis (30%), Cabo Frio (19.8%) and Paraty (16.8%). 43.5% responded that they visited or intended to visit more than one city.

Security

The survey also wanted to know from tourists about their expectations regarding public safety in the state before traveling. On a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is not at all safe and 5 is very safe, 42.6% had very negative expectations. When evaluating the experience in Rio, however, 59.3% of respondents said they were satisfied or very satisfied with public safety. 16.9% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied.
