Brazilian tennis player Thiago Monteiro, 29 years old, defeated this Saturday (26), in the second round of the Masters 1000 in Madrid, the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, with a double 6-4. Monteiro, who is ranked 118th in the ATP rankings, had a solid match against the runner-up of the Barcelona tournament and winner of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000. The dispute lasted just over an hour and a half. The Greek, number 7 in the world, suffered on the clay of the Caja Mágica, closed this Saturday due to rain in Madrid.

“I was very focused and did well on my serve. It was a little better than I expected, but I played a good game”, said Monteiro in a press conference after the victory. The Brazilian broke the Greek’s serve in the third game of the first set and at the beginning of the second half. Tsitsipas still saved three match points, but the Brazilian managed to confirm his serve in the 10th game of the second set and closed the match.

“He was very aggressive. His first serve percentage was very high. I felt like I lacked rhythm for the rest of the match,” Tsitsipas explained after the defeat.

Monteiro, who has not yet won a title, will face Czech Jiri Lehecka in the third round, who eliminated Serbian Hamad Medjedovic with scores of 7-5 and 6-4.
