A study by the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Firjan), published this April, pointed out that Mato Grosso will be one of the four states in the country that will close the 2024 accounts in the black, that is, the revenue will be enough to cover public expenditure.

The survey was carried out based on data from the National Treasury Secretariat (STN), referring to the first two months of 2024. Alongside Mato Grosso, the States of São Paulo, Amapá and Espírito Santo also have a positive budget forecast.

“Mato Grosso’s budget balance is a reflection of the measures we have taken since the beginning of our administration, in 2019. They were tough measures at the beginning, but the entire population has been reaping the results for a few years now, with many works and actions which have already been delivered and many others being carried out in all regions of the State”, stated Governor Mauro Mendes.

For this year, the Government of Mato Grosso foresees a budget of R$35 billion, with 15% of current net revenue, corresponding to R$4.3 billion, being applied to direct investments for the population, such as works and actions in all areas.

R$29.8 billion will be allocated to State expenses, including payroll expenses and debt amortization.

Firjan also revealed that the States that will not be able to cover expenses will have an accumulated deficit of R$29.3 billion in 2024. The biggest deficit will be in Rio de Janeiro, with R$10.4 billion.

According to the federation, one of the main reasons for the low performance of the States was that expenses grew faster than revenue.

“Although Mato Grosso did its homework to not let expenses be greater than revenue, the State also recorded an almost double increase in personnel expenses. In 2023, revenue grew 5.3%, while payroll, 9%. We are careful to analyze these numbers and not spend beyond what is possible, to keep the accounts in the black and continue on the path of development for Mato Grosso”, he concluded. the governor.
