City councilor in BA asks for a minute of silence for femicide suspect
According to José Carneiro, the suspect was “a good person, loved in the city and who would have killed Geisa de Assunção Santiago in a moment of weakness”.
“I would like to ask your Excellency, that at the end of this session, we can hold a minute of silence in honor of citizen Mackeybe, who unfortunately committed a crime, but was a beloved person in this city. Every human being has moments of weakness and I’m sure that with Mackeybe it was a moment of weakness”, said José Carneiro.
“And I would like to pay tribute to the brother of lawyer Hércules, who unfortunately killed his wife and committed suicide, Mackeybe Oliveira”, he pointed out.
The request was refuted by fellow councilor Jhonatas Monteiro (PSOL), who repudiated the request and said that if there had to be “a minute of silence” in the Chamber, it should be in honor of the victim who was murdered.
“I don’t believe it is appropriate, especially in the month of March, marked by the International Day of Women’s Struggle, for the City Council to grant a minute of silence in relation to this. If there is a minute of silence, it should be in honor of Geisa de Assunção Santiago, 42 years old, barbarously murdered”, countered the mayor.
“I wanted to express our repudiation, fortunately the minute of silence did not take place, but I could not fail to make this note,” he added.
Councilor apologizes after asking for a minute of silence for feminicide suspect in BA
After the negative repercussion in the city, councilor José Carneiro recanted on social media.
“Every human being is capable of mistakes and successes and today, upon arriving at City Hall, I was quite unhappy when I wanted to pay tribute to a citizen who took the life of his wife and then took his own life”, he stated.
José Carneiro also highlighted that he has a good relationship with several women and reaffirmed his apology.
“I want to be supportive of Geisa’s life, I am married, I have daughters, granddaughters, friends and I want at this moment to recognize a mistake made by apologizing, for forgiveness to all women in Brazil and the world, especially those from Feira de Santana. Very thanks”.
Geisa de Assunção, 42 years old, was shot dead on the night of March 21, in Feira de Santana, 100 km from Salvador, after leaving the couple’s car, in the Santo Antônio dos Prazeres neighborhood. She was hit in the right arm, skull, chest and right hand.
As reported by the Civil Police, the suspect of committing feminicide, Mackeybe Oliveira da Silva, committed suicide after the crime.
The couple had a liquor store, located on Avenida Fraga Maia. There is still no information about what motivated the act of violence.
The bodies of Geisa de Assunção and Mackeybe Oliveira were taken to the Technical Police Department (DPT) of Feira de Santana. The city’s Civil Police reported that they will listen to the couple’s family and friends to seek information about their relationship.
