Inmates receive certificate of completion of crafts workshop in Rio Branco

It is from retail to retail that 17 women, who are serving their sentences in the Rio Branco women’s prison, have created a new story. They received the opportunity to learn the art of fuxico crafts, which is a technique that involves making small ornaments using leftover fabric. An event was held this Tuesday, the 26th, at the Rio Branco women’s prison, to certify the inmates who completed the workshop.

The project is the result of a technical cooperation agreement between the Institute of Penitentiary Administration of Acre (Iapen), the Court of Justice of Acre (TJ/AC) and the Federal Institute of Acre (Ifac). The resources allocated to the purchase of materials to carry out the workshop were paid for by judge Regina Ferrari, president of the TJ, who was present at the certification of the re-educated women.

During her speech, the judge highlighted the work that Justice has done within the Penitentiary System, in favor of resocialization, with several projects carried out and ended with advice: “When you leave here, plant flowers, take care of your garden”, making reference to to the life of each woman who will need to start over outside the prison environment. The judge was presented with a yo-yo quilt by the inmates.

The coordinator of Art, Culture and Citizenship at the Federal Institute of Acre (Ifac), Mariete Buriti, was responsible for teaching art to the students. She says that the course was a 60-hour course that brought many benefits to each participant. “Here they enjoyed themselves, they really enjoyed what they were doing. I came and spent the whole day here with them, and it was very beneficial. I feel very happy with the performance these girls had”, stated the coordinator.

Dalvani Azevedo, director of the prison, explained that now, with the first inmates trained, the project must be expanded. “This workshop is not just to train some prisoners, it is to train multipliers, as they will also be mediators inside the cells”.

Inmate AC F, aged 28, was one of the students to complete the course. She has already served her sentence for more than six years and says that this year, she should receive her long-awaited freedom. She says having opportunities like this brings hope for a better future. “It’s a very great opportunity, as she is deprived of her freedom, and these courses bring hope at the end of the tunnel, because many times we don’t have opportunities,” said the re-educated student.

And the advances didn’t stop there. Through financial resources, coming from pecuniary penalties, during the event, the Penal Executions and Alternative Measures Court (Vepma) delivered four permits to carry out new projects in the women’s prison: the Salão Escola, with the acquisition of beauty salon equipment, Entrelinhas, which aims to care for the detainee’s mental health; the First Delivery Kit project, aimed at inmates who do not have a family member to deliver the materials needed by the inmate; and the Televisita project: a possibility of affection, which enables communication via video call for prisoners who have family members living in other states. The resources total more than R$90 thousand.

The news was received with joy by the inmates, who see the projects as a new opportunity to start over. And for those who already have their diploma in hand, like the ACF prisoner, they are already thinking about taking their next step: “This course will be useful for our life abroad, because it is a way for us to leave here and make money to support ourselves. our family. I was very excited to receive this diploma. It’s a learning experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”

And it is like this, step by step, from point to point, that small scraps gain shape and beauty, and what were once simple pieces of forgotten cloth are renewed and transformed into unique and valuable pieces.
