More than 40 years after the formation of iconic groups such as Aborto Elétrico, Legião Urbana, Capital Inicial and Plebe Rude, the Federal District celebrates, on the 27th, the Official Brasiliense Rock Day, with a special program at Espaço Cultural Renato Russo. With a solemn session and several musical attractions, the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District will give true recognition to the genre, which placed the Federal Capital on the national and global music scene.
From 6 pm onwards, cultural producers and big names in Brazilian rock from different generations and the general public gather in the space, located at 508 Sul, which is named after the unforgettable Renato Russo, whose date of birth was chosen to mark the celebration date, thanks to Law No. 7,386/2024, authored by District Deputy Ricardo Vale (PT). “We have a fantastic legacy and we need to always value it and be proud of it. This is a construction that began with the recognition of rock as intangible heritage, another law of mine. Now, we have our date, and we are going to help in the construction of the Brazilian rock museum here, in our Federal Capital”, says Ricardo Vale.
The district is the author of the proposal for the solemn session on the 27th, which will feature the delivery of recognition motions to various cultural agents in the city who have developed or promoted rock in Brasilia to this day. The names were chosen from different segments, such as communicators, programs, zines, portals, backstage, plastic and visual artists, photographers, filmmakers, writers, producers, collectives, studios, artists and others. The choice of honorees came from members of the Cultura Rock Sector, who approached Deputy Ricardo Vale to join efforts in celebrating the date.
Representative instrument
The revolutionary character of rock is one of the elements that allow the genre to be updated. Therefore, in addition to the formal session, the Renato Russo space will host a series of presentations and exhibitions that illustrate the diverse and innovative character of rock. According to João Mancha, cultural producer, Brasília needed a “shake-up” to look more closely at local production. “Our history of rock began in the 1960s and exploded in Brazil and the world in the 1980s. We need a major repositioning in the face of public authorities and society, with all cities buzzing with authorial rock, with public policies sectorized, structuring and permanent!”, he argues.
From 6 pm onwards, the exhibitions Tu é Punk, bro? and We have our own time, curated by Jailson Dantas and Dom Macarius, respectively. The objective of the presentations is to bring a small sample with physical material, vinyls and photographs that illustrate the history of the genre in the city. At the same time, at Teatro Galpão Hugo Rodas there will be a performance by five original bands from DF. Opening the stage is the band Madamme Bovary, with female representation. Next, the group Cálida Essência presents Brazilian rock that mixes with northeastern references and features people with disabilities in its composition. The heavy metal group Arandu Arakuaa is the next attraction, with rock sung in indigenous languages, another important demonstration of inclusion and reverence for original peoples. Closing the musical tasting, the legendary bands ARD and Detrito Federal, which this year celebrate four decades of history, present the best of hardcore and punk rock from DF.
After the pocket show, the solemn session takes place in the Marco Antônio auditorium, with the delivery of the praise motions. Participants will also have a surprise during the session, a tribute to the work of Renato Russo.
