The Genomas SUS project is open for applications to select scholarship holders who have up to two years of experience in the areas of data science and bioinformatics. Scholarships are being offered to work in the program in eight cities in Brazil, including Guarapuava, and also for remote work. The scholarships are for 40 hours per week, with values that can reach R$12 thousand.

The project selects candidates with at least 2 years of experience after graduation for technological and research scholarships, preferably in person. In addition to basic bioinformatics skills, the candidate must provide references and demonstrate experience in one or more of the following: management of IT infrastructure for genomics and bioinformatics; genomic analysis pipelines; population genomic analyses; analyzes for genotype-phenotype association studies; clinical genomics; and data security.

One of its objectives is to generate and analyze data from 21 thousand complete genomes of Brazilians to be sequenced. Created in 2020, Genomas Brasil is developed along two lines: genomic sequencing to predict the risk of diseases, allowing safer and more effective treatments for patients, and the use of advanced therapies (such as cell, gene and engineered tissue therapies based on of human cells).

Genome SUS comprises eight research centers in six states, two of which are in Paraná: in Guarapuava, with activities developed at the State University of the Center-West (Unicentro), in partnership with the Institute for Cancer Research (Ipec), and in Curitiba , at the Carlos Chagas Institute (ICC) linked to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz).

To participate in the selection process, simply access the registration website and fill out the form. On the same website, it is also possible to check the responsibilities necessary to take up one of the scholarships.

PARANÁ GENOMES – Paraná is also developing a similar project. Genomas Paraná aims to understand the characteristics of the population considering health, the environment in which they live, lifestyle, family history and the genetic profile of each person. It is expected to last 10 years.

Among the stages of the project is the description of the genetic and epidemiological profile of the population of Paraná, starting with a representative sample from the municipality of Guarapuava. By building a database and using Artificial Intelligence techniques, the project seeks to identify biomarkers of genetic predisposition for chronic non-communicable diseases, such as metabolic syndrome and associated comorbidities (obesity, diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases).
