Have you ever heard the saying “whoever cries or sings is frightened away”? In reality, there are many people who find it difficult to connect with their feelings and crying ends up becoming a difficult time. However, experts in the field of psychology argue that letting your feelings out is beneficial and can even help your mental health.

According to information from the Center for Studies and Research “Dr. João Amorim” (CEJAM), the science that studies the psychological effects of body reactions, also known as “psychosomatics”, assesses that holding back crying negatively influences your well-being and creates bad consequences for your body.

The accumulation of stress, unstable mood, changes in blood pressure, digestive problems, exhaustion and even increased cases of depression and anxiety are linked to the repression of emotions. It is worth noting, however, that the signs are different for each person, depending on their own emotional state and experience.

The recommendation is to understand your feelings and cry if you feel like it, regardless of what people may think. Associate crying with a way of releasing excesses and self-care.

It is also recommended to establish good relationships with your emotions from childhood and avoid phrases such as “swallow your crying” or “boys don’t cry”, so that children do not associate the fact of crying with weakness or vulnerability. The problem is even greater for boys, who are often raised to be strong and unemotional.

Other guidelines include always seeking help from a health professional, maintaining a balanced diet and constant physical exercise, in addition to activities such as meditation and therapy. Remembering that crying is different from despairing or being in a crisis process, a moment that needs to be evaluated carefully.
