Understand what transplantation is:

What is bone marrow?
The Ministry of Health defines bone marrow as a liquid tissue that occupies the interior of the bones. It is known as ‘marrow’ and is responsible for the production of the cells that make up blood.

What is the function of the bone marrow?
It is fundamental for the development of blood cells, as white blood cells (leukocytes) are produced there, which act in the body’s defense system. Red blood cells (RBCs), responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body, and platelets, which make up the blood clotting system.

Who can donate bone marrow?
.
Be between 18 and 35 years old
. Be in good health
. Do not have any infectious, hematological condition or any type of cancer.

What are the ways to donate marrow?
1. Collection from blood, by simple puncture in arm veins, after stimulating the body with a medicine that induces the release of these cells from the marrow into the blood.

2.Puncture directly into the bone marrow (hip bone). The donation takes place in a surgical center and the donor receives medication to avoid discomfort and remain asleep during cell collection, which takes place through simple punctures in the posterior region of the hip bone, without the need for a surgical approach.

The choice of source depends on the patient’s illness and the donor’s wishes.

How does a bone marrow transplant work on the patient’s body?
The National Cancer Institute (INCA) informs that bone marrow transplantation replaces diseased or deficient bone marrow with normal bone marrow cells.
