The first doses of the Moderna vaccine against Covid-19 arrived in Brazil this Thursday (2). The first shipment totaled 1.4 million doses, within a contract for 12.5 million doses signed last month.

The arrival comes after a legal dispute over the contract with the Brazilian government between Moderna and Pfizer. This is the first time that the pharmaceutical company’s vaccine against Covid has arrived in Brazil. The country also vaccinates against the disease with vaccines from the Butantan Institute, Astrazeneca in partnership with Fiocruz, Pfizer and Janssen.

Vaccination with the vaccine was approved by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) in March this year. This version of the vaccine is already updated to the XBB 1.5 variant, a subvariant of Ômicron.

The vaccine is indicated for active immunization to prevent Covid-19 in children from 6 months of age and adults.

The vaccines arrived this morning at Guarulhos International Airport and undergo quality control before heading to the Ministry of Health storage warehouse located close to the airport. According to the Ministry, the distribution of the vaccine should take place in the next few days, but a date has not been announced.

A next batch of the vaccine should arrive in Brazil this week, containing another 1 million doses.

Moderna’s vaccine against Covid-19 has been used in the United States since December 2020, when it was approved for emergency use given the severity of the pandemic at the time.
