After winning the Oscar for “Best Actress” for her role in “Poor Creatures”, Emma Stone opened up about her artistic life. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the star said she wishes the public would start referring to her by her real name — Emily — instead of “Emma Stone.”
While promoting her new film with Nathan Fielder, Stone was asked if anyone in the film industry refers to her by her real name. The star then revealed: “[Sim], when I get to know them better, the people I work with do this. According to the actress, her friends started calling her Emily after she felt uncomfortable with her “other version”. “So I freaked out a few years ago. For some reason, I thought, ‘I can’t do this anymore. Just call me Emily’”, she confessed. During the conversation, she also explained that some call her Em, including Fielder himself, as a way of creating a “bridge” between the two versions.
In 2018, Stone said that she has been called Emma since she was 16 and that the name in question was chosen in honor of Emma Bunton, from the Spice Girls. “I wanted to be called Emma after Baby Spice. And guess what? Now I am!”joked the actress, in an interview with Jimmy Fallon.
However, now the Oscar winner has reinforced that she misses being recognized by her birth name. “If a fan comes up to you and says, ‘Can I take a selfie, Emily?’ you would say, ‘It’s Emma’”, the reporter wanted to know. Sincerely, Stone said: “No. That would be so good. I would like to be Emily.”
