Gustavo Karam lives in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, where his mother, librarian Betina Callado, also lives. He has a degree in Law and currently works in the area of ​​legal consultancy. Guilherme Karam, who was always quite discreet in his personal life, was married to retired librarian Betina Callado, with whom he had Gustavo Callado. “We had been together for 18 years. It even came out once that we separated, but there was never anything like that. We have an apartment here in Florianópolis”, she said in an interview with EXTRA, in July 2016.

Betina said at the time that she met Guilherme Karam in 1989, when he went to Florianópolis to present a show. “We met and started dating despite the distance. I was a federal employee and couldn’t ask for a transfer and he had his job in Rio. We saw each other whenever we could.”

Degenerative disease

Guilherme Karam inherited Machado-Joseph syndrome from his mother, which he also passed on to his other three children. Two die, in addition to the mother, and Karan’s sister remains in a wheelchair. “He inherited it from his mother. I lost a son to the same disease. Guilherme was in a wheelchair all the time. There were times when he was lucid and others when he wasn’t,” said his father, Alfredo, at the time the actor was admitted to a hospital in Rio. Machado-Joseph syndrome is an autosomal dominant disease, which means that it is genetic and hereditary and can be transmitted by the father or mother.
