30 years of “The Division Bell”

-

I’ve been listening to Pink Floyd forever. I remember an episode in my youth during a carnival, at the beginning of the 80s, which I went to Rio das Ostras, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The place was still an interesting resort without the mega procession that the region faces today. In the middle of a week where we only heard samba, in front of a bar, there was a car with the sound turned up loud and amazingly, “Wish You Were Here” was playing. It was a relief to my ears, so much so that I remember the passage to this day.

I see the band’s career divided into 4 very distinct periods: the first goes from the initial album to “Obscure by Clouds”, there are 7 albums; the second phase encompasses 3 albums, “Dark Side”, “Wish You Were Here” and “Animals”; the later, “The Wall” and “Final Cut”, and the fourth and last, the albums without Roger Waters. Well, without going into the merits of each phase, I assume that I listen to them all without prejudice.

“The Division Bell” is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, it is the band’s twelfth album and does not feature Roger Waters, however, it features saxophonist Dick Parry who returns to collaborate with Pink Floyd after almost 20 years, participating in the track “Wearing the Inside Out”. Upon release, specialized critics criticized the album, but it was an absolute success with the public, reaching number one in several countries. The term “Division Bell” was inspired by the Division Bell of the English Parliament, which is rung when there is a division of opinion among parliamentarians, indicating when a vote should take place.

The album is long, 11 songs, over an hour long and extremely irregular. It has great songs, questionable passages and some even boring songs. In the group of great songs are the two instrumentals; the album opener “Cluster One” and “Marooned” — which went on to win a Grammy Award in the category of “Best Rock Instrumental Performance” in 1995. There is also “A Great Day for Freedom”, where the lyrics juxtapose the euphoria from the fall of the Berlin Wall with the ethnic cleansing and genocide that followed in Yugoslavia; “Wearing the Inside Out” where the vocals are with Richard Wright and the super hit “High Hopes”, a song about Gilmour’s childhood and adolescence in Cambridge. The rest are not worth commenting on.

The album makes two things very clear, the first is the sensitivity and genius of David Gilmour carrying a guitar, always a few notes placed at the right time, and the second, the weakness he has in writing lyrics, evidenced by the participation of Samson (his wife) in almost every lyric on the album. Personally, I don’t take much into account Roger Waters’ arrogant opinions, but I think he was right in declaring that “The Division Bell” is not a Pink Floyd album, given the excessive participation of other authors in the album’s lyrics. It would be better as a David Gimour album.

The cover is a rock icon, the sculptures are second only in popularity to the “Dark Side” prism, even beating the phallus of Led Zeppelin’s “Presence”.
