247 – Federal deputy Gleisi Hoffmann (PT-PR), national president of the PT, harshly criticized the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, in an interview with the Flownews podcast, on Friday (26). Hoffmann accused Campos Neto of looking for an excuse to boycott Brazil by expressing concerns about the possible impact of job growth on service sector inflation during an event.

According to Hoffmann, this stance is “criminal” and serves as a justification for maintaining the basic interest rate (Selic) at high levels, which harms companies’ investments and affects the population. She argues that the BC president’s frequent statements contradict important achievements for the well-being of Brazilians, such as increased employment and income.

Hoffmann highlighted a report by Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), published by the newspaper Valor Econômico, which points out that in 2023 the country’s publicly traded companies spent more on financial expenses, especially interest payments, than on investments in their activities.

During the interview, Hoffmann emphasized that the high Selic levels are disconnected from the country’s economic reality, considering economic stability and controlled inflation. She questioned the need to maintain interest rates at such high levels, when the inflation target is low and being met.

Furthermore, the deputy criticized the BC’s signals that the pace of Selic reduction could be even slower, considering that this would harm efforts to boost the economy and employment in the country.

In relation to the advances made during the Lula government, Hoffmann defended the strengthening of public investments as a way of leveraging development. She highlighted the reconstruction and strengthening of several public policies in just 14 months of government, highlighting that the positive impacts of these actions will soon be noticed by the population.
