United States District Judge Aileen Cannon postponed this Tuesday (May 7, 2024) the trial of former US President Donald Trump indefinitely. In the decision, the judge cited outstanding issues related to the treatment of confidential information and the need for additional preparations as justification. This change in schedule could benefit Trump, whose lawyers had requested the trial be postponed until after the presidential election, scheduled for November 5.

Donald Trump’s trial in Florida was initially scheduled to begin on May 20. The decision made by the judge highlights a significant change in the schedule of pre-trial proceedings, with the last hearing scheduled for July 22.

Trump faces 88 criminal charges in 4 separate courts, including a Manhattan Supreme Court trial for making a secret payment to porn star Stormy Daniels. Additionally, he is accused of conspiring to overturn his 2020 election defeat in Washington DC, and faces election interference charges in Georgia.

Trump faces 37 charges for keeping confidential files in his possession after leaving the White House in 2021. They include crimes such as conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding and concealing documents.
