Plane drags fuselage on runway after problem with landing gear when landing in Istanbul
A FedEx Boeing 767 made an emergency landing this Wednesday (8) at Istanbul airport, Turkey, after a failure in the front landing gear. The front part of the fuselage directly touched the runway. Despite this, no one was injured.
The aircraft is a freighter and was not carrying passengers. She had taken off from Charles de Gaulle airport, which serves Paris, France, towards the Turkish city.
The pilot informed the control tower about the equipment failure, and landed with the assistance of flight controllers. Traffic was interrupted on the runway for a few hours, but Istanbul airport has other runways, which continued to operate throughout the day.
In the video, it is possible to see a lot of smoke and even flames when the fuselage impacted the asphalt.
Neither Boeing nor FedEx commented on the incident until this report was published.
The 767 is an old Boeing model, which began operating commercial flights in 1982. More than 1,300 units have already been manufactured, and a large part of the current fleet performs cargo flights. Boeing considers the 787 Dreamliner, which began operations in 2011, as its successor, as it has a similar payload capacity.
The American manufacturer intends to remove the 767 from the line in 2027, as it has been operating with increasing restrictions due to fuel consumption and noise level.
