A Brazilian Capuchin friar was stabbed in the head while distributing breakfast at a shelter home for homeless people in Dublin, Ireland, this Friday (26), according to a local newspaper.
The attack at the Capuchin Day Center occurred shortly after 10:30 am in a room where visitors to the center for the homeless were having breakfast.
Friar Ademir Marques received first aid at the scene and was rushed to the hospital, where he received treatment. He has since been released and is now recovering at home, according to local media.
“We don’t know exactly what happened, but we know it was [um ataque] completely free. Friar Ademir volunteered here regularly and was helping with breakfast when a visitor to the center suddenly got up and stabbed him in the back of the head,” a witness told the newspaper “Sunday World”.
The source told the newspaper that the attack was “completely unexpected” because Ademir’s attacker was a regular at the center. According to the witness, the man was immediately immobilized by local security until the police arrived, when he was arrested.
In a statement, the Capuchin Day Center confirmed the attack on “Sunday World” and said that Ademir’s injuries were superficial and that he should return to activities soon.
“Emergency services have been contacted for follow-up. Fortunately, our team’s quick intervention meant that Frei Ademir only suffered a superficial wound and will be back at his ministry tomorrow as usual. We are offering follow-up support to our team and volunteers and are grateful for the prompt response of the emergency services,” the statement said.
The Center offers daily services for people experiencing homelessness, which include breakfast and lunch, delivery of clothes and essential personal hygiene items.
