At a breakfast with journalists on Tuesday, the 23rd, the PT member called the opposition’s movement around Edmundo González “extraordinary”, omitting that the opposition member María Corina Machado was prevented by the Chavista regime from running for office and also from registering her ally Corina Yoris.

“The issue of Venezuela, something extraordinary is happening: the entire opposition has come together and is launching a single candidate. There will be elections. I think there will be international monitoring of the elections, many people are interested in following it. And, if Brazil is invited, it will participate in monitoring the elections”, stated President Lula.

“[Estamos] with the expectation that when it ends, people will return to normality. In other words, whoever won takes office and governs and whoever lost prepares for the other elections, as I prepared after three defeats here in Brazil,” he added.

Lula also once again criticized the sanctions imposed by the United States on the Venezuelan dictatorship.
“I hope that Venezuela returns to normality, so that the United States lifts the sanctions and that Venezuela can welcome back the people who are leaving Venezuela due to the economic situation,” he said.

Led by María Corina Machado, the Unitary Democratic Platform (PUD) declared support for Edmundo González, one of the 12 candidates released by the Chavista regime to join the electoral farce set up by Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro.

A career diplomat, González had been provisionally registered on the Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE) website shortly before the end of the electoral deadline.

Maduro’s electoral farce

The National Electoral Council of Venezuela announced for July 28, the birthday of former dictator Hugo Chávez, the electoral farce that should seal yet another government for Nicolás Maduro.

The date knocks on the door of the second semester, the period scheduled for the election to take place, in compliance with the Barbados agreement, signed between the dictatorship and the opposition with the official intention of guaranteeing clean elections.

It was the National Assembly of Venezuela, dominated by the Maduro regime, that began, in February, the process of consulting authorities and members of the opposition to schedule the election.

Regardless of the opposition’s contributions, the person who defined the date was the CNE, also equipped by Chavismo.
