US President Joe Biden criticized Japan and India, accusing them of being xenophobic. During a campaign event in the American capital, Washington, on Wednesday (1st) night, the Democratic president equated the Japanese and Indian position on migration to that of China and Russia.

The American president argued that the reason why these nations are “stagnant” economically is because “they don’t want migrants”.

“It’s because they are [países] xenophobes, they don’t want migrants and migrants make us stronger. It’s not a joke or hyperbole,” the president said at an event to mark Asian American Heritage Month.

Biden further claimed that the US economy is growing because there are “workers who come to the country and want to contribute.”

The United States has been a historic ally of Japan since the end of World War II and has been trying to get closer to India to curb China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific, and Biden’s aggressive statements contrast with his speeches before prime ministers Fumio Kishida and Narendra Modi, respectively.

When welcoming Kishida to the White House in April, Biden stated that the relationship with Japan is “powerful proof” of how, “by investing in our alliance and increasing our collective ambitions, we achieve remarkable results”.

In June last year, Modi was at the White House and Biden also praised relations between the United States and India. “A partnership that is among the most important in the world, which is stronger, closer and more dynamic than at any time in history,” said the American president.

This Thursday (2), the White House minimized Biden’s comments. “[A Índia e o Japão] They know that the president values collaboration and partnership with them as the key allies they are on strategic and security issues,” Security Council spokesman John Kirby said in a conference call with the press.
