247 – The deputy head of the Palestinian Hamas movement, Al-Yahya, is not “optimistic” about a ceasefire agreement with Israel in the near future, Iranian broadcaster PressTV reported on Thursday (28).

However, he was open to a proposal made by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Wednesday (27). The member of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government said during a meeting with US officials in Washington that, once military actions in the Gaza Strip cease, the enclave will not be governed by either Israel or the Palestinian movement Hamas, and that a local alternative must be built, according to the report in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

Al-Yahya reacted, stating that the movement does not insist on the “unilateral government” of Gaza. “Hamas is ready to show flexibility in ceasefire negotiations for the sake of the Palestinians,” he added.

He also criticized Netanyahu, stating that the Israeli prime minister wants to prolong the attack on Gaza and that Israel has failed to break the will of the Palestinians and armed resistance groups to the occupation of Palestinian lands.
