‘Baby Rena’: few know, but an important detail of the real case was not shown by Netflix in the series

Netflix’s latest viral hit, “Baby Reindeer” is sparking strong reactions from viewers and critics alike, scoring 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The seven-episode limited drama series was written and created by Scottish comedian Richard Gaddwho stars as an alternate version of himself, Donny Dunn.

The series follows Donny on a downward spiral when he meets a lonely woman named Martha (Jessica Gunning), who transforms from friend to stalker. Donny tries to escape Martha’s obsession, while trying to navigate the lingering effects of past traumas.

From the first scene, “Baby Reindeer” captivates the viewer and what makes everything more interesting is that it is based on real events. But is the story true? More than that, there are facts that have not been shown. He doesn’t reveal it in the series, but there were 41 thousand emails, 350 hours of voice messages, 744 tweets, 46 Facebook messages and 106 pages of letters. In addition, the stalker also sent gifts, such as sleeping pills, a wool hat, underwear and a toy reindeer.

Is ‘Baby Reindeer’ Based on a True Story?

Richard Gadd told “Variety” that the series is “emotionally 100 percent true,” with the story’s events “borrowed from cases that happened to me and from real people I’ve met. But of course you can’t make the exact truth, either.” for legal as well as artistic reasons.”

It’s one of those stranger-than-fiction stories. “Baby Reindeer” doesn’t sugarcoat the messy realities of life and isn’t afraid to show the vulnerability of imperfect people or the flaws of vulnerable people. Gadd doesn’t reduce the story to that of stalker and victim, but emphasizes the humanity of everyone involved and is brutally honest about his own mistakes in handling the situation.

“People are afraid to admit they’ve made mistakes, and I think a lot of human mistakes are made through people-pleasing. You keep lying because it’s easier to get around the tension of a situation,” he said. As for “The Independent”, Gadd was careful not to paint the character Martha as “a monster” because he believes that “she is not well and the system has failed her”, he said.

Netflix’s ‘Baby Reindeer’ Ending, Explained

Although Gadd draws a parallel between his character and Martha early on, it’s clear that Donny is still an active member of society – Martha is not.

In the final episode, the similarities between the two are stronger than ever. At this point, Martha has been sentenced to a few months in prison and given a restraining order, but Donny still obsessively listens to her voicemails.

In one of these messages, Martha alludes to an abusive childhood in which she remembered her only comfort – a toy reindeer, whose title is “Baby Reindeer”. Deep down, Martha is desperately lonely and traumatized, just like him.
