Just because the band is back doesn’t mean the members need to be friends. Kerry King It is Tom Araya they spoke for the last time during the last show of Slayerin November 2019. Even with the group reuniting for a series of festival appearances in the middle of the year, communication between the two remains non-existent.

In an interview with Metal Hammer (via Guitar), King stated that he and Araya — whom he harshly criticized in another recent statement to Rolling Stone — have not yet spoken. He then offered an explanation for this unusual situation.
He said:
“What is normal? There is no manual for this kind of thing. It’s not like I’m mad at him or anything. We are very different people and we evolved more into a relationship of partners at the end of the day. He has very different interests than me, as well as very different points of view. Does this make me hate him? No. But I don’t need to talk to him every day.”
The guitarist, however, stated that this dynamic does not affect the band. He explained:
“When it comes time to rehearse, I have no problems showing up. We are professionals, it’s what we do.”

During an interview with Rolling Stone in February, before the announcement of the group’s return, Kerry King had already discussed how the two had not been in contact since the end of Slayer. He stated:
“Not even a text message. Not even an email. I spoke to everyone in the band by phone, text or email. If Tom called me, I’d probably answer. It would depend on the reason for contact. But I don’t want him to die right now.”
Slayer’s return
Slayer’s brief reunion tour kicks off at Riot Fest in Chicago on September 20th-22nd. The Louder Than Life Festival takes place a week later in Louisville, Kentucky, on the 27th. Finally, they close this trip on October 10th at Aftershock, held in the city of Sacramento, California. Louder Than Life and Aftershock are Dammy Wimmer Presents events.
