The Alagoas Court has scheduled a trial for April 10th that will determine whether Globo has the right to terminate the contract with TV Gazeta, its affiliate in Alagoas. The broadcaster, owned by former president and former senator Fernando Collor, has maintained a partnership with Globo since 1975.

The original contract between the parties ended on December 31st, and Globo cited Collor’s conviction as a reason for not renewing the 48-year partnership.

TV Gazeta has been in judicial recovery since 2019 due to debts accumulated over several years. Despite a vote of creditors approving the recovery plan, Collor’s group is being investigated for alleged bankruptcy crimes.

In November 2023, TV Gazeta filed a court request to prevent the termination of the affiliation contract. He claimed that without the support of the country’s largest broadcaster, he would not be able to meet the debt payment commitments included in his judicial recovery plan.

The company stated that, without renewing the contract, a wave of mass layoffs would be inevitable, affecting around 209 of the company’s 279 employees. An injunction granted after the support of the state Public Ministry, required Globo to renew the contract until 2028, but was revoked in January.

By court order, TV Gazeta continues to broadcast Globo’s signal until the merits of the matter are definitively judged.
