SBPC holds today the 2nd debate of the Conference Series “Countdown to the Bicentennial: Towards Independence”

The Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC) holds this Wednesday, August 31, at 6 pm, the second debate of the series of Conferences “Countdown to the Bicentennial: Towards Independence”with the theme “Science and the environment”. The activities, which started yesterday (30th) and will continue until September 6th, will feature face-to-face and online debates broadcast on the SBPC YouTube channel.

This Wednesday’s activity will have as presenter Rosa Carmina de Sena Couto, SBPC’s regional secretary in Pará, and will have the participation of Ima Célia Guimarães Vieira, researcher at the Emílio Goeldi Museum and counselor of the SBPC, and Edna Maria Ramos de Castro, professor emerita from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA).

For Renato Janine Ribeiro, president of SBPC, the Bicentennial of Independence is a great opportunity to make clear how science, technology, innovation, education, culture, health, the environment and social inclusion, values that SBPC defends and supports since its foundation, they are decisive to guarantee national sovereignty.

“Independence is not something that only refers to the past. Therefore, we want to debate the present and think about the future. Show how this virtuous circle – science, technology, innovation, education, culture, health, environment and social inclusion – can guarantee Brazil’s sovereignty,” she says.

Cláudia Linhares Sales, director of SBPC, says that the themes were chosen with the intention of capturing the current moment, of crises in several aspects. According to her, only with science will the country be able to achieve real independence and that is what the debates want to show. “These are important themes that cannot be ignored in this reflection on Independence. The challenges facing the Brazilian nation today are enormous. We will not emerge from the crisis of education or the environment without science. We will not achieve sustainable development goals without science,” she says.

The event is part of a series of debates that will bring discussions about how science contributes to national sovereignty and independence in various sectors. The first event debated “Science and industrial development”. The next topics will be “Science and the environment”, “Science and education”, “Science and health” and “Science and sustainable development”.
