Singer Anderson Leonardo, lead singer of the group Molejo, died this Friday (26), aged 51. He had been treating cancer in the inguinal region since 2022. The artist had been hospitalized in serious condition since the beginning of April, in a private hospital in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro.

What is cancer in the inguinal region?

According to oncologist Fernando Zamprogno, from Kora Saúde, the inguinal region is a common site for metastases or primary tumors. Some examples are lymphomas – such as Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma – which affect the lymph nodes.

These structures, according to the specialist, may be a “pathway” for other types of cancer to reach the inguinal region. Some examples are cancer of the prostate, bladder, anal canal, penis and vulva.

What is the treatment for cancer in the inguinal region?

The oncologist explains that it is necessary to know the location of the disease to define a treatment:

“Cancer is not one disease, there are several diseases, each with its own specific type of treatment. It involves surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and the most current treatments – possibly immunotherapy, targeted therapies, for example.”

What are the symptoms of cancer in the inguinal region?

Any injury in the inguinal region, warns the oncologist, requires investigation. These lesions may appear as hardened lumps, which may or may not be painful and red.

“Many people are diagnosed with cancer, for example, of the anal canal, through a metastasis in the lymph node region. Or penile cancer, for example.”

The diagnosis of the disease, explains Zamprogno, depends on a biopsy of the region.

“We do a biopsy to extract a piece of this material and study it, and, once the diagnosis is made, we do additional CT or MRI exams, physical exams, so that we can then trace where the disease came from.”
