Vaccination against dengue begins in Santos from this Wednesday (8), from 9 am to 4 pm in 26 polyclinics. The target audience, established by the Ministry of Health, will be children aged 10 and 11.

To complete the vaccination schedule and be protected, two doses are required, with an interval of three months between them. Santos received 5,400 doses of vaccine.

As the vaccination room is under maintenance, doses against dengue will not be available at the polyclinics Martins Fontes (Rua Luiza Macuco, 40), Monte Serrat (Praça Correia de Melo s/nº), Vila Progresso (Rua Três, houses 1 and 2), Penha (Rua Três, 150) and Santa Maria (Rua 10 s/nº).

PARTICIPATION

Even with the arrival of the vaccine, it is important to highlight that the population’s participation in combating Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that transmits dengue, chikungunya, zika and urban yellow fever, remains extremely necessary. The Santos Health Department continues with measures to combat mosquitoes throughout the year (see below). In the joint efforts carried out in 2024 alone, 1,162 outbreaks of mosquito larvae have already been eliminated.

“The vaccine is an extremely important measure to protect our children, in addition to reducing viral circulation since fewer people will be affected by dengue. But it is important to maintain all precautions, especially avoiding the accumulation of stagnant water, which creates breeding sites, as a large part of the population will still not be covered. It is always worth remembering: no mosquitoes, no disease!”, says the Secretary of Health, Denis Valejo.

In 2024, Santos recorded 1,906 cases of dengue and 43 of chikungunya. No deaths were recorded.

DOCUMENTS

To access the vaccine, you must present a photo ID, proof of residence in Santos, CPF and vaccination card.

SANTOS’ STRATEGIES FOR FIGHTING AEDES AEGYPTI – WHOLE YEAR

Casa a Casa – routine visitation program to properties

Mutirão – sweep carried out weekly in some neighborhood of the City

Special properties and strategic points – places visited monthly Special properties: large circulation of people – schools, hotels, shopping centers

Strategic points: more risk of breeding sites – tire shops, workshops, scrap metals, cemeteries, construction sites

Nebulization – application of insecticide around the home of an infected person to combat the mosquito in its adult stage, when it is transmitting diseases

Traps – Santos has 481 traps distributed throughout the city, monitored weekly, which show the mosquito infestation rate in the area

Epidemiological monitoring – notification and investigation of all cases of diseases transmitted by Aedes by Epidemiological Surveillance

Educational Activities – educational activities on the streets, schools, lectures at companies and institutions, toll booths at different points in the City, participation in events, themed stands and meetings in condominiums

Monitoring with drones in difficult-to-access locations

Responding to complaints – made to the Municipal Ombudsman’s Office by calling 162 or website www.santos.sp.gov.br/ouvidoria

TOP TIPS

Check for standing water in plant pots and dishes

Sinks – check for leaks and keep drains sealed

Drains in the floor – cover them with a screen, if they are not the open and close type. Apply bleach twice a week

Refrigerator outer tray – check for water accumulation, clean and keep dry

Toilet bowl and flush boxes – keep covered

Gutters and slabs – if it is not possible to check whether they accumulate water, look for signs of moisture. If so, resolve the issue

Water tanks – check the condition of the lids. Request replacement of missing or broken ones

Ornamental fountains, pet drinking fountains, swimming pools – check for the presence of living organisms in the water. Clean regularly
