Samsung is reportedly planning to end its partnership with AMD and venture independently into developing customized GPU cores for the Exynos, its line of processors for cell phones and tablets, according to information shared by leaker Roland Quandt last Friday (04 ).

The tipster claims that Samsung is preparing the launch of chips for smartphones with their own GPU to 2026 — the year in which it would stop using AMD’s RDNA architecture. As a result, the partnership between the companies is expected to be maintained until next year with the launch of the Exynos 2500, which should be used in the Galaxy S25.

With this, it is deduced that a supposed “Exynos 2600” has a new GPU design developed by Samsung. This strategy would intensify its dispute with Qualcomm, which is also betting on proprietary solutions with its Adreno GPU — which, coincidentally, is based on technologies from the extinct ATI, a company acquired by AMD in 2006.

The Xclipse GPU, the result of joint work between Samsung and AMD, equips the Exynos 2200 and 2400. The first has a GPU based on RDNA 2; the second, based on RDNA 3. There is still no information about the architecture that will be used in the Exynos 2500, as AMD is preparing the launch of two versions: RDNA 3+ and RDNA 4.

It is worth remembering that, in addition to high-end cell phones, the South Korean company also integrated AMD technologies into its intermediate models with the Exynos 1480, Exynos 1380 and other platforms in the line with RDNA GPU.
