Petrobras decided to interrupt, for an indefinite period, the operation of the Sul Capixaba Gas Treatment Unit (UTGSUL). The information was given to the president of the Federation of Industries of Espírito Santo (Findes), Cris Samorini, by executives from the state-owned company. The entity, keeping an eye on the constant drop in production, requested a meeting with the company to discuss the matter, the response was this:

“We were, at our request, with José Luz (general manager of the Natural Gas Active Business Unit) here at Findes and he told us that a plan to reduce gas availability is underway and that, now in July, UTGSUL’s operation would be zero or very close to zero. They argue that it is a unit that has technology that is more compliant with post-salt gas, but a large part of the production comes from the pre-salt and ends up going to the treatment unit. Cacimbas (Linhares), which has more adequate technology. The unit’s idleness has been above 90% for a long time, it is only treating a small part of what still comes from the Jubarte field, but this will now end in July” , explained Cris Samorini.

The director said that the Petrobras executive made it clear that the plant will not be closed and that a maintenance team will be maintained permanently on site. “The operation will be interrupted, but, according to them, there will not even be hibernation. The plant will be preserved and will be in a kind of readiness in case it returns to treating gas, there may be new discoveries, or some other type of transition fuel ( energy) that suits the unit”. At the end of last year, on a visit to the state, the president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, said that the Espírito Santo gas park could be occupied by hydrogen.

Opened on October 27, 2010, the Sul Capixaba Gas Treatment Unit has the capacity to process 2.5 million m³ of gas per day and cost, at the time, R$900 million. Corrected for inflation (IPCA) for the period, this amounts to R$1.96 billion.
