As the ESPNO Ministry of Sports would formalize a letter to paralyze Brazilian football due to the natural tragedy involving floods in Rio Grande do Sul. The document was sent to the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) this Friday (10).

The letter, signed by André ‘Fufuca’, Minister of Sports, sets out the five main points that make the Federal Government request the suspension of Brazilian football due to the State of Public Calamity decreed by the Government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul.

See below:

Mr. President,

1. With my cordial greetings, in consideration of the State of Public Calamity decreed by the Government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, in the form of Decree No. 57,596, of May 1, 2024 and recognized by the National Secretariat for Civil Protection and Defense of the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development, according to Ordinance No. 1,377/2024, published on page 1, of Section 1 – Extra C, of edition No. 85-C of the Official Gazette of the Union of May 5, 2024, I request that the stoppage of the Brazilian Football Championship/ 2024.

2. In view of the catastrophe that follows, the request is necessary far beyond the football stadiums, training fields, concentration and physical location where everyone involved in sport circulates, but for all the people, families and their loved ones who donate in this moment in survival and reconstruction of houses and everything else affected.

3. It is important to mention that, according to the latest Civil Defense bulletin, the number of deaths due to the rains has already reached 107; 134 are missing, and the number of displaced people now exceeds 330,000. In total, 1.74 million people from Rio Grande do Sul were affected in some way by the floods. The number of municipalities affected reaches 431, equivalent to more than 80% of the state’s cities. In other words, the situation in which the players and their families find themselves is heartbreaking, as the physical and psychological effects of these athletes have been immeasurably affected.

4. Thus, due to such heavy rains that have hit the State of Rio Grande do Sul since 04/29/2024 and, as the tragedy that took place in that state of the Federation is widely known in the Brazilian State, it is also understood that the entire country is involved in supporting the players and their families, as well as the entire population of that region.

5. For all of the above, these are the reasons for this request, for the Brazilian Football Championship to be suspended this year in 2024.

Yours sincerely,

ANDRÉ LUIZ CARVALHO RIBEIRO

CBF manifests itself

After the Brazilian team was called up for the two friendlies in June and then the Copa América, Ednaldo Rodrigues, president of the CBF, spoke about the letter sent by the Federal Government.

According to the director, the Technical Council will be convened to analyze the request, and the final decision will be taken by the clubs themselves.

See the statement below:

“When the CBF defines a competition, we hold meetings of the Technical Councils of Series A, B, C and D and also of the grassroots. If a strike is requested, we will inform each Series of these clubs, so that they can position themselves in in relation to the document from the Ministry of Sports. From there, if necessary, bring together the Technical Council so that they can deliberate: ‘look, can we stop all competition?

And the international competitions that follow, how do you do it? They are narrowing down, there are two rounds left for the next stages of the Libertadores and Sudamericana.

Every decision regarding a competition, starting, having, suspending, extending, postponing, all of this is discussed jointly by the CBF with the clubs. The power of the CBF is not supreme and absolute. It is a limited and based power, just as we did in a meeting with all the clubs, we will do it too. From the moment the clubs themselves understand that they need to deliberate on the matter.

At the moment, we are tuned directly through the clubs in Rio Grande do Sul and its Federation. The CBF fully complied with what was requested from the clubs, which was the postponement of the competition until May 27th. Everything that happens from now on, we will have to talk to the clubs and all football divisions.”

To date, the CBF suspended the games of teams from Rio Grande do Sul. In Series A, Guild, International It is Youth These are the teams competing in the competition.
