Palmeiras goes to Uruguay to face Liverpool in the Libertadores

Multi-champion and record holder for Palmeiras, coach Abel Ferreira is in 13th place in the ranking of the 50 best coaches in the world, published by the English magazine FourFourTwo, this week.

The Portuguese appears ahead of names like Thomas Tuchel, from Bayern, Didier Deschamps, from the French team, and Xavi, from Barcelona. He is the first of two coaches working in Brazilian football, alongside Tite, who is at Flamengo and appears 40th on the list.

In the magazine’s assessment, Abel Ferreira is seen as a coach who has the energy of a Duracell rabbit on the edge of the field and who transformed Palmeiras’ mentality into serial winners.

– So the comparisons with José Mourinho are appropriate, to say the least… But he is rooted in empathy and academy football – says an excerpt from the text.

Since October 2020 at Palmeiras, Abel Ferreira has won ten titles and was crowned the greatest champion among Verdão coaches at the beginning of this year, alongside Osvaldo Brandão.

There were three Paulistas (2022, 2023 and 2024), two Brazilians (2022 and 2023), one Copa do Brasil (2020), one Supercup do Brasil (2023), one Recopa Sul-Americana (2022) and two Libertadores (2020 and 2021 ).

Individually, in 2024 he also achieved a milestone that he pursued as a personal goal: the trophy for best coach in the Campeonato Paulista, which he had lost in the 2022 and 2023 editions, despite the titles won with the team.

Ranked 40th and the only Brazilian on the list, Tite is seen as a coach capable of finding “harmony with samba stars” and says that his time as Brazil’s coach shows this. He has been at Flamengo since October last year and has 22 wins, six draws and seven defeats in 35 matches.
