South American 2024 Format

The 2024 Copa Sudamericana started with 56 participants. In the first phase, 32 clubs played a single duel with a rival from the same country. There were four teams from Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The 16 winners joined the 12 who qualified directly for the group stage – six from Brazil and six from Argentina. There was also the entry of four defeated teams in the third preliminary phase of the Copa Libertadores.

The eight South American groups will have six rounds, with each participant playing three games at home and three away.

The first placed teams go to the round of 16, while the second placed teams compete in playoffs (round trip) with the eight eliminated in third place in their brackets in the Libertadores.

Round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals will also take place in two matches. The decision will be in a single game and on a neutral field.

The Copa Sudamericana champion qualifies for two competitions in 2025: Copa Libertadores and Recopa Sul-Americana.
