Vienna (Austria) – Fighting against his body over the last three years to find his best physical and technical shape, Austrian Dominic Thiem seems increasingly close to the end of his career. If, at the end of January, he had already said he was giving himself one last chance to recover on the circuit, this time the end of the former world number 3’s career may still have a date to come.

According to the Austrian portal Salzburger Nachrichten, Thiem is preparing to retire after competing in the ATP 500 in Vienna, which takes place at the end of October in his homeland. The publication states that the tennis player has already started communicating with his partners and sponsors about his future.

Although it has not yet been officially confirmed, the 2020 US Open champion plans to make a farewell schedule, aiming to compete in some specific tournaments, says the website. To do so, however, he must receive invitations, as his current ranking, 117th place, does not allow him to enter directly into major events.

Latest public statements already indicated a decision

Even though it has not been confirmed so far, the news does not really come as a surprise to anyone who follows the 30-year-old Austrian’s career. Since the beginning of 2024 he had been showing some signs that he could leave the circuit this season. After his elimination at the Australian Open debut, he separated from coach Benjamin Ebrahimzadeh and made statements that he was making his last efforts to rediscover his best days.

“I see this as my last chance. I returned to the court two years ago after the injury and ended 2022 close to the top 100 and last year in 98. If I end the year close to 100 again, I will have to consider whether it is all still worth it”, said the Austrian at the end of January, aiming to regain a place in the top 50 in 2024.

Two months later, Thiem revealed that he had a new problem with the right wrist, the same one he suffered from in recent years due to an injury. As a result, he lost more time away from tournaments and only played 14 matches throughout the season, considering qualis, main draws and Davis Cup. Of that total, he won only six games.
