This Wednesday morning (8), the third qualifying session of the Brazilian swimming Olympic Trials took place. The highlight is Nicolas Albiero, who performed strongly in the 200m butterfly, close to the Olympic index for the event. The preliminary heats of the men’s 200m breaststroke, women’s 200m medley, women’s and men’s 100m backstroke were also held.

The most impressive performance of the morning came in the men’s 200m butterfly with Nicolas Albiero. The son of coach Arthur Albieiro was born in the United States and recently managed to change countries at World Aquatics, being able to compete for Brazil. Nick went at a strong pace in the first 100m of the race, finishing with a time of 1min56s19, less than half a second off the Olympic rate (1min55s78). Albiero was still the only athlete to swim under two minutes in the qualifier. Olympic finalist Leonardo de Deus came in third place, with 2min00s60. Leo has already made the Olympic index in 2023, but it was in a test that was not valid to use the CBDA safeguard.

Other tests of the day

In the men’s 100m backstroke, world finalist Guilherme Guido was the fastest in the qualifiers, with a time of 55s08. Guilherme Bassetto, with 55s72, came in second place. The pair that went to the Tokyo Olympic Games need to improve by around a second and a half in the final to reach the Paris-2024 Olympic index.

In the women’s 100m backstroke, Maria Luiza Pessanha was the fastest with a time of 1min02s69. In the men’s 200m breaststroke, Guilherme Camossato came first with 2min13s50. Finally, in the women’s 200m medley, Fernanda Celidonio was the best in the qualifiers with 2min17s54.

This Wednesday’s finals of the Brazil Swimming Trophy, which serves as the Olympic Trial for Paris-2024, will take place from 6pm (Brasília time), in the Aeronautics Sports Commission pool, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ).
