Puma’s refusal has to do with the company’s contract with Palmeiras

Flamengo renewed its contract with Adidas until the end of 2029. Supplier of Fla materials since 2013, the German company had no strong competitors this year. Rubro-Negro’s vice president of marketing, Gustavo Oliveira explained why Pumas and Nike were left behind.

In an audio released by the Mundo Rubro-Negro portal, the manager details that Puma was the supplier that came closest to Flamengo. However, the company made it clear that it would not be able to sign Mengo if he renewed with Palmeiras. In other words, Fla was the brand’s ‘plan B’. Therefore, Mais Querido gave up on conversations.

— Puma was not interested in having two clubs. Maybe it even has a smaller club, but it wouldn’t have the desire to have Palmeiras and Flamengo. We had an initial chat with Puma, they talked later, but we already knew that if they had closed with Palmeiras, they would not be able to have two clubs the size of Palmeiras and Flamengo — said Gustavo.

AND NIKE?

According to the marketing vice-president, Flamengo only had one other option besides Adidas: Nike. However, the American company and the club itself did not take the lead to encourage negotiations. Thus, the possibility did not advance.

— Nike in Brazil is no longer Nike. It was purchased by Centauro. Currently, the Nike brand in Brazil is negotiated by Centauro, the only one that exists in the United States is the Brazilian team. She didn’t express interest nor did we, we felt like we would be talking to Centauro — detailed the leader.

DID YOU HAVE GIVOVA TOO?

— There was a company that came to us through a counselor, who brought a representative from an Italian company, Givova. And he said: we have 100 million, we can do this and that. Absolutely nothing ever appeared but it was in the press. He came, played to the press, because Flamengo provides media, advertised the company and made absolutely no proposal. Later we found out that the representative was asked whether he was really a representative or not — said the marketing vice.

FLAMENGO AND ADIDAS RENEW PARTNERSHIP WITH NEW VALUES

The new contract between Flamengo and Adidas is valid from January 1st of this year until December 31st, 2029. Therefore, there was a readjustment so that the contract ends at the end of the season — previously it was until April. The company will pay around R$90 million per year to Mengo.
