The infraction committed by Mercedes in the Sprint classification of the Formula 1 Miami GP, where mechanics worked on Lewis Hamilton’s car without helmets, resulted in a request for review by the FIA stewards.

During the second segment of qualifying, Hamilton was eliminated and the team made adjustments to the car. However, some mechanics were without the mandatory safety equipment, which violates Article 34.13 of the sporting regulations.

Despite summoning Mercedes, the stewards discovered that this was not an isolated case. It appears to be established practice for teams to allow pit crew members to work without helmets and goggles when lifting the car and attaching brake coolers.

Even considering a technical infraction, the stewards chose not to punish Mercedes. However, the incident raised an important question about pit safety.

“Penalizing one team, when almost all teams may have violated this article in some way, would not serve a useful purpose,” the commissioners said.

Given this, the FIA was asked to assess the need for changes. This review could focus either on current practices during all rating sessions, or on a change to the regulations themselves.
