The CBF arbitration committee released on Thursday night the VAR audio of Gil’s disallowed goal in the rout of the Santos 4-1 against Guaraniin Vila Belmiro, for the 4th round of Series B of the Brazilian Championship (see the video below).

Gil had scored Peixe’s third goal of the game at the end of the first half. After the goal was validated on the field, VAR checked the position of the defender, who was offside. However, in the middle of the ball’s path, it had passed by an opposing player – which would nullify the offside.

The match referee, Paulo Balance Alves, was called to the monitor to interpret the reaction of the Guarani defender. After analyzing a few moves, the referee concluded that the Bugre athlete had a deliberate touch, therefore, without intention. With that, he stated that the ball was very close and the player got scared, thus giving a rebound that would keep Gil in an irregular position.

The VAR team admits at first that it does not have the best cameras to analyze whether Gil’s position was irregular. The Guarani defender’s lines are passed between defender Gil’s legs.

“It’s fine, Paulo. We are having difficulty with the camera, but we are raising lines.”

After adjusting the lines, the VAR team calls the referee.

“Paulo, I need you to come to the review area to check if it is a rebound or if the defending player plays deliberately”, says VAR.

“For me, he has no space to play, he opens his leg in a reflex action on a ball that is coming from the attacker”, adds the VAR.

“For me, this is not deliberate, okay. The ball is very fast, it’s a rebound, it’s his reaction. It’s not deliberate. Short proximity, the ball comes very quickly and he doesn’t have full control of the ball to play deliberately. He doesn’t have full action, no. I’m going to return with offside,” says Paulo Balance Alves.
