Brazil is expected to be hit by another heat wave triggered by a region of high pressure. This will be the fourth episode of high temperatures in the country, with part of Rio Grande do Sul already feeling its effects. This phenomenon will slowly move to the east of the Southeast, parking and blocking the arrival of cold fronts to the Central-West and Southeast of Brazil.

In Rio Grande do Sul, the Missões, Norte and Serra regions will be particularly impacted, with temperatures 3°C to 5°C above average between April 22nd and May 2nd. This high pressure system, formed in the middle levels of the atmosphere in Central-South Brazil, keeps the air warm and inhibits the formation of heavy clouds, raising temperatures.

Despite the forecast of rain until Thursday (25) in RS, the intensification of the heat will be felt from Friday (26) and throughout the weekend, when the rains subside. Meteorologists warn that this phenomenon, unlike the last heat wave in March, is at a standstill and is expected to persist until at least May 2.

Although there is a connection to El Niño, weather extremes are mainly attributed to global climate change. The phenomenon is not expected to affect other regions of RS, where temperatures are expected to remain within normal limits due to continuous rain and the arrival of a mass of cold air from the high seas.
