According to data from the Municipal Department of Urban Development and Housing released this Sunday (5), the biggest flood in the history of Rio dos Sinos affected around 32 thousand people in Novo Hamburgo.
The number, however, represents the population within the area where the water reached, affected in whole or in part, and does not mean homeless. Currently, according to City Hall, around 4 thousand people are in shelters coordinated by the Municipal Administration. There are also people sheltered in churches and other institutions.
Aerial images from the Municipal Environment Secretariat show the situation of the dike in Novo Hamburgo, which remains intact along its entire length.
According to the press office, the incident on the dike on Saturday afternoon (4), in fact, was the erosion of a section of the dike next to the Casa de Bombas do Arroio Gauchinho, in the Santo Afonso neighborhood, on the São Leopoldo side, in an extension between 40 meters and 60 meters, apparently not very deep.
In the measurement made by Comusa, at 5 pm, the level of the Rio dos Sinos had dropped by 12 centimeters, from 9.15 meters, to 9.03 meters. However, despite the decline, there is still no forecast for the resumption of water abstraction in the Municipality.
