Even without having any defense of the featherweight belt (up to 65.7kg), Ilia Topuria He’s already thinking about a possible superfight in the future. In an interview with the ‘MMA Fighting’ website, the Spanish athlete said he is already planning a confrontation against Sean O’Malley, current bantamweight champion (up to 61.2kg) and classified the possible duel as the ‘biggest fight in UFC history’.
“If O’Malley defends the belt (against Merab Dvalishvili), which I have many doubts about, will be an exciting fight. O’Malley will fight Merab and I believe Merab will give him a beating. If he doesn’t, I’ll be waiting for O’Malley. If he dominates the category, you have to give him the chance to move on to the next one. Now it doesn’t make sense, because he has a guy who is the number one contender and deserves the chance. I believe Merab wins. I said to him, ‘Congratulations on defending the belt.’ He said, ‘I’m going to defend my belt. You do your thing and we’ll build the biggest fight in UFC history.’ That’s what’s going to happen. If he wins, it will be the biggest fight in UFC history,” said Topuria.
At the UFC 298held in February this year, Topuria knocked out the then champion Alexander Volkanovski and joined the select list of athletes who have already worn the Ultimate belt.
The following month, in UFC 299Sean O’Malley dominated Marlon Vera in a long-awaited rematch and defended the bantamweight belt for the first time.
