Leidy Elin has a new look. The former “Big Brother Brasil 24” participant took off her braids and is flaunting her powerful black power. On social media, she showed the transformation and reflected on the importance of keeping her hair that way.

“I know there are many people who feel insecure about their own hair, but what would we do without this crown that we all carry? Black power is a symbol of resistance, freedom and our strength. We cannot forget about how much we are important and capable of getting anywhere”, said Leidy.

To EXTRA, the 26-year-old Gonçalo native recalled the entire hair transition process, which began ten years ago. She went through fluctuations in self-esteem during this period, but the result made it all worth it.
— I started making my hair transition when I was 16. It was very difficult for society to accept our curly hair, due to structural racism. We lived with that aesthetic in which only straight hair was seen as beautiful, as our hair was always considered “ugly, dirty, hard”. It was liberating when this acceptance of curly hair came. As I had chemically treated hair, I had to go through a hair transition, which even took me into the world of braids. When I had to do the “big chop”, which is the famous big cut, removing all the chemical parts and leaving only the natural part, my self-esteem dropped a lot because it was too short and I felt terrible. That’s when braids appeared in my life.
Leidy turned this passion for braids into work. This was the profession she practiced before entering confinement. Now, with her fame, she has used social media to talk about hair and care.
— Braids were what helped me face my hair transition more calmly. At the time, it was using thread, and that helped me a lot to go through this process and accept my black power.
