Striker Antony’s celebration shortly after Manchester United’s victory over Coventry City, in the FA Cup semi-finalgenerated a lot of criticism in England. The Brazilian provoked the opposing team’s players after penalty kicks. Coach Erik ten Hag reprimanded him for this, but also sought to defend him.
— He (Antony) was provoked, that’s why he had that reaction. You didn’t see the provocation, just his reaction. But he shouldn’t have done that — commented the coach, in a press conference this Tuesday.
Antony made a gesture by placing his hand on his ear, looking towards the Coventry City team, following the penalty converted by Höjlundwhich won 4-2 on penalties, after a 3-3 draw in normal time plus extra time.
— We must recognize Coventry’s performance in reaching the semi-final and tying the game with us. We totally dominated for 70 minutes, and we should have closed the game 3-0. But they managed a great comeback — said ten Hag.
United will play in the FA Cup final on May 25th against their rivals Manchester City. Before that, the team will face six more commitments in the Premier League. The next one is this Wednesday, against Sheffield.
