Morelos loses weight after Santos charge and dreams of returning to the national team

Heavily criticized during Paulistão for his performance and physical form, striker Alfredo Morelos received an ultimatum from the club’s technical committee. Santos to continue at the club in 2024.

The attacker was about to be removed after the state final due to his physical condition, which has been affecting his performance. Initially, the Colombian was left off the list of entries for Series B, but ended up being registered later, although he was left out of the first round.

Santos tried to sign a new center forward to replace Morelos, without success. So, Carille promoted young striker Enzo Monteiro from the academy and encouraged Morelos to work to reduce his weight and earn a second chance.

Morelos continued training with the group, however, doing specific work. Furthermore, he hired a private fitness trainer to help him change his physical condition. According to DIÁRIO, he expressed his desire to stay at Santos because he liked the club and had adapted well in the city on the coast of São Paulo.

At 27 years old, Morelos also dreams of returning to the Colombian national team. One of his biggest wishes for 2024 was to participate in the Copa América. However, after not having a good start to the season, this desire became a little distant with the proximity of the competition, which takes place from June to July.

In addition to the different work done at CT Rei Pelé, the private training has been having an effect and surprised Santos’ medical department. After the results of the bioimpedance tests, a significant reduction in the athlete’s body fat rate was shown.

In the next match, Enzo Monteiro or Julio Furch should be one of the starters, but the coaching staff does not rule out giving Morelos a second chance in the following rounds due to their effort and progress. However, there is concern about how quickly to lose weight to avoid future injuries.

Alfredo Morelos was one of the players that the Santos board made an effort to keep in 2024. After relegation to Série B of the Brasileirão, many players agreed to reduce their salaries, including the Colombian.

He, who had the highest salary in the squad, accepted a reduction to around R$350,000, with an additional prize of R$10,000 for each goal scored. This season, Morelos participated in 11 games and scored two goals.
