Congress presidents promise measures to recover Rio Grande do Sul

The presidents of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), and the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), guaranteed this Sunday (5) that the National Congress will take measures to assist in the recovery of Rio Grande do Sul, after the severe rains that ravaged the state. Both were part of the delegation that accompanied President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his visit to the region.

During a speech in Porto Alegre, Arthur Pacheco described the situation as a “war”, emphasizing the need for “exceptional solutions”.

“In an exceptional and atypical situation like this, solutions also need to be exceptional and atypical. We are at war, and in times of war there is no room for bureaucracy or usual restrictions. We need to remove any obstacles to ensure that Rio Grande do Sul has everything you need,” said Pacheco.

In turn, Arthur Lira promised a “firm and effective” response from Congress.

“This week will be marked by intense negotiations and work in the National Congress, and the response will be strong, firm and effective, as it has been during the pandemic. The Legislative Houses will remain open and will not close their eyes to this situation. We will be on the side of the Power Executive, which will be responsible for requesting the necessary legislative measures after the decisions”, declared the president of the Chamber of Deputies.

The vice-president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Minister Edson Fachin, also present, defended the implementation of a “special and emergency legal regime” to deal with the catastrophe.

“It is essential to act quickly. From a legal point of view, the adoption of a special and transitional regime will allow the relaxation of certain rules incompatible with this climate emergency in Rio Grande do Sul”, highlighted the minister.
